Hi, Loved the video! My neighbor has a couple of Miss Kim Lilacs out in front of her house. She is having a issue with one side of lilacs are sparse and very small leaves. They are not yellowed or veiny leaves, so don't think Iron is a problem. She said the last couple of years they have been going downhill! She goes out and prunes the ends, it's not helping. Any recomendations?

Looks like you had a well deserved great open house. It is indeed v lush looking. Also having a small space helps you protect plants like you said so they can handle, the heat and the cold better. I’ do tell people to grow stuff around their shrubs - even annuals to keep the weeds out and the soil cool. It beats repeating. Here’s my question. I would like you to address how to prepare soil in a new build. I get that one should do the wood chips cover thing. But do you scrape out the tops soil a bit? To remove the debris? I would like to know that.

I have a question about transplanting during the summer. Although not ideal, I need to move some shade plants because we had to take down a few trees and they are now getting scorched! With the temps approaching 100 degrees here in Atlanta (zone 8a), I don't even know if it's possible to successfully transplant them in these conditions. Do you have any tips for us as we try to save these plants? We have about 6 hostas of different variety and 2-3 ferns.

To kickstart a garden when mulching with woodchips i would recommend putting down horse manure or something similar first, then just mulch over it , all the bacteria, funghi and worms have a new space to expand , a little "dusting" might just do the job

Jap Barberry/Heavenly (not heavenly) Bamboo Nandina mix was planted before we moved to current home. 8a/Somerville, TN. It is ugly and tenacious, 100% intertwined, both plants invasive imports. How would you recommend making this hedge row disappear? Hardiest plants ever. Full of nasty thorns. I want nice natives here instead. Thank You Jim.

Great info & thanks for the last point about where we are all starting from is different. We started with johnson grass and shallow top soil before hard pan... that hadn't been lived on by anyone, just mowed like a pasture. Now, in our 4th year, we've just had to embrace mowing down the johnson grass & have the vegetable garden in raised beds with 2 layers of weed barrier underneath. Because of the extreme wind, our high tunnel has become my favorite place to hang out and garden.

Just a general question, as I have a large corner lot and am attempting to conquer more of it by creating more ‘beds’. How long after you spray (Bermuda grass!)with Roundup, can something be planted in that area? I regret having to use it, but every other method I have used to eradicate it…still has to be sprayed. I totally agree that one large bed is better than several little ones. I can walk the perimeter and keep the grass under pretty good control. I enjoy your no nonsense approach to gardening!
